Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV

2026-10-02 13:30:02

Model Overview

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) serves as the flagship new energy model in Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) Range Rover Sport lineup. It delivers a fine balance between high performance and efficiency through electrification, all while preserving the model's signature sporting luxury DNA and renowned Land Rover all-terrain prowess. The 2026 Range Rover Sport was officially launched in the Chinese market in March 2026, offering four petrol variants priced between RM898,000 and RM1,950,000. The PHEV plug-in hybrid version is positioned as a mid-to-high-spec powertrain option, with an estimated domestic price range of RM1,200,000 to RM2,000,000. In overseas markets, the PHEV comes in two output tunes: P460e and P550e. Dimension-wise, the 2026 model measures 4,946 mm in length, 2,047 mm in width, and 1,820 mm in height, with a 2,997 mm wheelbase. Configured as a 5-seater, its key rivals include luxury PHEV SUVs such as the BMW X5 xDrive50e, Mercedes-Benz GLE 400e, and Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid.

Design Language

Styling-wise, the 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV stays true to the iconic Range Rover family design language, maintaining a virtually identical look to its petrol-powered siblings. Up front, it sports the signature inverted trapezoidal grille with a black honeycomb mesh pattern, flanked by new Matrix LED headlamps. Classic design cues, including the floating roofline, clamshell bonnet, and sleek proportions, are carried over. The side profile remains clean and uncluttered, accented by flush deployable door handles across the range. Round back, higher-spec trims are expected to feature a full-width light bar and an illuminated "Range Rover" script. The vehicle also boasts an aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.29 Cd.

Inside, the cabin features a driver-focused layout, anchored by a 13.1-inch curved floating touchscreen and a 13.7-inch fully digital instrument cluster. Infotainment duties are handled by the upgraded Pivi Pro system, which supports 5G connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and wireless Apple CarPlay. The interior is dressed in high-grade leather upholstery paired with brushed metal accents, with four-zone automatic climate control fitted as standard across all variants.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the bonnet, the 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV pairs a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. Two states of tune are available:

  • P460e: Produces a combined system output of 338 kW (460 PS) and 620 Nm of torque, delivering a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.4 seconds. WLTP combined fuel consumption is rated as low as 1.6 L/100 km, with CO₂ emissions of 37 g/km.

  • P550e: Delivers a total system output of 405 kW (551 PS), with the 3.0T inline-six petrol engine alone producing 294 kW (400 PS).

Energy is stored in a 38.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering a WLTP pure electric driving range of around 113 to 126 km—more than adequate for daily urban commutes. For charging, it supports 50 kW DC fast charging, juicing the battery from 0% to 80% in just 30 to 40 minutes, whereas a full charge via a standard 230V domestic socket takes approximately 15 hours. The fuel tank capacity stands at 71 litres. Power is sent via an 8-speed automatic transmission mated to a standard full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) system across the range. The vehicle runs on minimum RON 95 petrol.

Chassis and Handling

The chassis is built with premium aluminium alloys, with the lightweight aluminium architecture providing exceptional body rigidity. Electronic Air Suspension with Adaptive Dynamics is standard, continuously adjusting ride height and damping in real time. It also comes equipped with the Terrain Response 2 system capable of adapting to various driving surfaces, complemented by standard full-time AWD. Maximum wading depth is rated at 900 mm. In terms of towing capability, it offers a braked towing capacity of 3,000 kg and an unbraked towing capacity of 750 kg. Kerb weight is rated at 2,660 kg.

Cabin and Equipment

The cabin centres around the 13.1-inch curved floating touchscreen and 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster, running the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system with 5G connectivity, OTA updates, and wireless Apple CarPlay support. For audiophiles, mid-to-high-spec variants come equipped with a Meridian™ sound system featuring 19 to 23 speakers. Comfort amenities fitted as standard across all variants include four-zone automatic climate control, wireless smartphone charging, a Head-Up Display (HUD), and heated and ventilated front seats. Boot capacity stands at 835 litres with the rear seats upright, expanding to 1,860 litres when folded flat.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV comes equipped with a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite. Key features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, and Park Assist, complemented by a 360-degree surround-view camera along with front and rear parking sensors. On the passive safety front, the model secured a full five-star ANCAP safety rating (tested in 2022). Multiple airbags and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) come standard across the range. The vehicle is backed by a 5-year/unlimited-mileage warranty.

Market Performance and Verdict

In its first month on sale, the 2026 Range Rover Sport registered 2,137 units, making it the best-selling model in the Land Rover lineup. The entry-level variant starts from RM598,000, representing a reduction of roughly RM20,000 compared to the 2025 model, while mid-to-high-spec trims continue to offer 3.0T inline-six, 4.4T V8, and plug-in hybrid options. Armed with standout highlights like its 3.0T PHEV powertrain (460 PS / 620 Nm), 113 km electric range, 900 mm wading depth, and Terrain Response system, the Range Rover Sport PHEV holds a distinctive edge in the luxury plug-in hybrid SUV segment. Its primary shortcoming lies in its relatively conventional advanced driver assistance tech, which lacks the City or Highway Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) capabilities increasingly seen in rival new-generation EVs. Land Rover has confirmed that an all-electric Range Rover Sport is slated for debut in 2027, built on the MLA-Flex platform with dual-motor AWD and a 117 kWh battery. Serving as a key stepping stone from the internal combustion era to full electrification, the 2026 Range Rover Sport PHEV achieves a well-rounded blend of performance, efficiency, and go-anywhere capability through its plug-in hybrid powertrain.
